Biblical vs Modern Hebrew

Are you learning Hebrew so you’ll be able to speak to your Israeli cousin and to engage in small talk during Shabbat dinner? Or do you want to discover the Scriptures in their original meanings and get better acquainted with ancient and magical Israel?

The table below shows the main differences.

Biblical Hebrew Course Modern Hebrew Course
Learning goal A deeper understanding of the scriptures through the original language The ability to communicate with Israeli people and feel at home in Israel
Previous knowledge? A basic understanding of the Bible Not required
End result Reading and interpreting Bible texts Reading and communicating in everyday life

How to choose a good Hebrew school?

FAQ about Hebrew schools (and how we ranked them)

Learning a language well enough, to be able to talk to family, make new friends or travel certainly takes time.

What matters is: how much time exactly, and how you feel while doing it. If you learn with the wrong teacher one thing is certain: you will be throwing a bunch of time and money out the window.

In order to help you avoid this, we’ve put together a list of what we consider to be the most important points, so you can choose a language school that is right for you.

1. Certified and recommended language school

Before choosing a school you should check:

  • What other students say about it
  • How many students have learned there
  • How long they’ve been around

One of the best ways to know if a school is recommended is  to check if its’ learning method is recognized by any respectable institution, such as a  university or professional association.

2. Your teacher should be a real teacher

First of all your teacher should be a native speaker, but just speaking a language does not necessarily make a person capable of teaching that language. The ideal is Ulpan-accredited teachers, the director of studies should regularly observe the new teacher’s lessons and provide them with on-going feedback.

Learning one-on-one with a teacher or in a small group is the best way of learning.  In addition to that, we recommend learning with a premade video service in order to be able to study at your own pace and improve your speaking and understanding skills.

The apps that just offer multiple question tests are usually harder to learn with.

3. Group sizes

Although the upper legal limit of students is 16, we believe that 4-8 is the ideal number of students in one class. Individual lessons are only better for those who find it difficult to reconcile their needs and availability with others. From our experience, motivation is easier maintained in a group, and practicing certain forms of communication requires more than two people (the teacher and the student).

4. Atmosphere

You will be successful in the things that you enjoy doing. This is why it is important that you have a good time. The staff and teachers, together with you, can create a friendly atmosphere.

5. Price

There is a large price range in online language-learning solutions, however, we pay for a language course with both our money and time.

Classes with real-life teachers are more expensive but you learn quicker and more profoundly. If you follow the guidelines we’ve suggested you should find a school that offers the best value for your money
